Breast Cancer and Endocrine Surgery

Breast conserving surgery involves a small ‘cosmetic’ incision to remove the tumour and a small amount of surrounding breast tissue. Radiotherapy is generally required after surgery.

Mastectomy is removal of all the breast tissue on the affected side. This is usually in the setting of large or multiple cancers or, if a genetic mutation is found. Dr. Preda works with plastic surgeons who will be able to discuss options for immediate (at the time of cancer surgery) or delayed (after the first operation and sometimes other treatments) breast reconstruction. This can be with native tissue (e.g from the abdominal wall) or with a prosthesis (‘breast implant’).

This is a procedure to locate the first draining lymph node(s) from a breast cancer, usually in the axilla (armpit).

This is removal of all potentially involved lymph nodes from the axilla on the side of a breast cancer if pre-operative tests indicate they are involved with cancer.

A detailed history is taken and if necessary, patients can be referred for genetic testing. Where a genetic mutation or strong family history has been determined, Dr. Preda will ensure an appropriate surveillance plan (regular clinical review and imaging studies) is in place.

Breast lumps are not uncommon and there are a variety of causes including conditions other than cancer. Whether a lump is detected by the patient or GP or on mammography or ultrasound, a thorough assessment and management plan can be made.
